LOVE YOUR WALPOLE WILDERNESS

Since the very beginning of LYS, when Connie and I decided that we’d combine our challenge system with her own personal bucket-list, Connie was adamant that I experience the tree top walk in the Walpole Wilderness on her behalf. It’s a series of boardwalks strung 40 metres above ground, snaking through the tops of the beautiful Tingle Tree Forrest. These are no ordinary trees - they tower higher than any other trees I’ve seen before, reminiscent of The Magic Faraway Tree. The trees there are so tall and majestic; it felt unreal. So it was with mixed feelings that I embarked upon her challenge - to ride through the tree tops atop my one-wheeler. It felt wrong that she wasn’t there, but at the same time it was impossible not to appreciate the majesty of the place. I recorded this little vid to try and help capture the experience. A great reward really, for enduring the most challenging undulations of the trip thus far. Sorry to rub it in sis!

After being smashed by the sandy terrain and plagues of flies, this swim was some of the most welcome relief ever… heaven! xsj

You never know what you’ll find on the road. We were lucky enough to see the aftermath of a rare sign brawl… it’s not every day you get to see something like that! We’ll be watching our backs now though! xsj

Today was special for the fact that I got some time out on the road, minus the vehicles. No traffic; just me and the open road. Sorry I rabbit on a bit, but here are some of my thoughts recorded into my phone!

600+ k’s along pot-holed, corrugated, rocky, sandy track. The great Oodnadatta Track. Not built for unicycles, that’s for sure, virtue of the fact that we snapped the unicycle today!

As Jon Bon Jonno put it, ‘I’m just glad that the Oodnadatta broke the unicycle, and not you!’ But she damn near did break me. I got stuck in the sand over and over and was pitched off my saddle again and again. The rocks and holes hit my balls and my back with relentless enthusiasm. The heat extracted all out of me physically. The winds played havoc with my state of mind. There seemed no light at the end of the tunnel. This is me 20 k’s from the end of it all…

Jayco were amongst the first to jump on board our little-engine-that-could by providing an awesome Expanda Series caravan that will get Sam and the crew around the country in luxury that they are not yet accustomed to.  Without the house on wheels we wouldn’t really have a goose on a unicycle riding around the nation. Our heart expands every time we think about what Jayco have done for Love Your Sister.

Love Your Workout

Attempting to unicycle 15,000kms on a unicycle isn’t something you want to attempt without a few hours of training under your belt.  OK, so maybe it’s something you want to attempt…. never.

Fitness First were one of our firsts supporters to come on board the Love Your Sister journey, they’re working towards a fitter Australia. 

Fitness First have whipped Sam into shape, and done their best to make sure he makes it the whole way ‘round Australia. If they can help Sam make it around the country on one wheel, they can help anyone with their fitness goals, crazy or otherwise.
